We love to sign up rowers looking to stay in shape and build community.

The history behind the boats

NVRC boats have dragon based or dragon related names, reflecting the club’s dragon mascot which is based on a map of the Occoquan River.

SMAUG
 

The draconic villain in the book, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien.  The Smaug is an 8+ and is the first boat NVRC ever purchased.

FORTISSAX
 

​​​​​A boss monster dragon in the video game Elden Ring that wields lightning.  The Fortissax is a starboard rigged, stern loader 4+.

RONAELE
 

This name is an anagram of one of the club’s greatest rowers and supporters, Eleanor Hay, who consistently exhibits a dragon’s spirit on the river.  The Ronaele is a fore loader 4+.

THORN​
 

A reference to a “thorny dragon”, a species of lizard endemic to Australia  The Thorn is a stern loader 4+.

DROGON
 

One of the three dragons in George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series and, later, the “Game of Thrones” television series.  The Drogon is an 8+.

Falkor
 

The luck dragon featured in the movie The Neverending Story. The Falkor is an 8+.

RIVER DRAGON​

This name emphasizes the ferocity and spirit of the club’s rowers on the river.  This River Dragon is an 8+.

MUSHU
 

The newest addition to the crew, this is an 8+ named after the durable, mythical, and seemigly immortal Disney dragon, Mushu.

The Northern Virginia Rowing Club (NVRC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to teaching the sport of rowing to masters rowers, as defined by US Rowing. We are committed to fostering a community of rowers of all levels and ages, providing coaching, equipment, and support for a fulfilling rowing experience.
